Greater Louisville Inc. - the Metro Chamber of Commerce is a not-for-profit, business leadership organization where regional community leaders come together to accelerate business competitiveness, economic growth and job creation in the Greater Louisville region.  GLI leads economic and global outreach strategies focused on business attraction; nurtures the entrepreneurial eco-system and fast growth companies; and champions the development of the community's talent base.  As the voice of the business community, GLI advocates for a pro-business environment and facilitates business leadership engagement on issues that impact regional competitiveness. 

EnterpriseCorp is an entrepreneurial support organization within Greater Louisville Inc. and the Louisville Office of the Kentucky Innovation Network.  Funded by community partners, EnterpriseCorp assists entrepreneurs with business plan assessment, customer discovery, capital access, talent acquisition, space selection, strategic introductions and peer-to-peer networking.  We support the culture of the community through a variety of educational series and recognition events.  We collect data and convene leaders to prepare the Louisville region for the next generation of innovators.

PURPOSE:

When it comes to capital needs, the arguments are made on both sides of the investment table the deals aren't high enough quality vs. there aren't enough investors.  The barriers to capital can be lowered through educating entrepreneurs on accessing and using alternative forms of early stage funding from bootstrapping and crowdfunding to how to meet with angel investors.  Additionally, qualified angel investors and a need for lead investors is also required.  The Commercialization Director responsible for Capital Development will augment the EnterpriseCorp team and will be the credible "go-to-expert" on early stage capital access with a specific focus on the following programs that add to the culture, infrastructure and strategic development of our region's entrepreneurial community.  This role has the responsibility to develop and implement a strong and accessible capital environment for tech-based or tech-enabled early stage companies.  The role is focused on educating and advising startup founders on a variety of sources to finance their business including bootstrapping, local, state and national grants, crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, non-dilutive funding, debt-based financing and equity financing, depending on the needs/stage of the startup.  The position also includes assisting them with valuation, term sheet negotiation and creative capitalization.  The Commercialization Director, Capital Development will educate and recruit new angel investors,  will reignite early stage investment through access to funds, peer-to-peer recruitment and a restructured angel investment group.  Additionally, this position will facilitate key contacts among grant programs, local and state capital funds, regional and out-of-region angel groups and legislative supporters. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Commercialization Director, Capital Development

  • Enterprise Angels restructure and revitalize Louisville's angel investor network through identification of potential investors, training (angel investing 101, due diligence, term sheets and valuation), partnerships with established angels, and growing a diversified network of investors. Track investment data, develop/implement an angel recruitment program, and implement and manage the region's angel network.  Develop content for and build an informational website, LouisvilleEnterpriseAngels.com, following our brand standards and website template
  • Funding Bootcamp using the experience from our pilot, "Founders & Funders," develop a recurring program that educates entrepreneurs on bootstrapping, crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, and grant sourcing (federal, state and local) as the easiest and most reliable sources of funding for a startup. Provide a strategic roadmap for achieving sustainability through customer funding and couple with the lean startup methodology to provide a more tactical approach to achieving those goals through validated learning from customers.  Requires in-depth understanding of lean startup methodology, customer discovery and Business Model Canvas
  • Startup Attraction implement our existing attraction plan by researching and reaching out nationally to those early stage companies that have received federal SBIR grant funding and would be a good fit for Louisville. Utilize industry strength segmentation of these high potential startups interested in the KY SBIR/STTR Matching Grant program and develop a competitive "Start in Lou" incentive package
  • Kentucky Angel Tax Credit incentive program research the effectiveness of state incentive programs for the current Kentucky Angel Investment Act (KAIA) tax credit program and using this data, advocate/lobby for expansion of angel investor tax credit incentives with regional and statewide partners
  • Increase our primary metric of "Million Dollar Babies" by 20% or from 10 to 12, from a base of 0 -- these are early stage, innovative, technology-based companies that cross the threshold of $1M in revenue or $1M raised in a single equity round.
  • Drive our secondary metric of 30 client companies funded -- through guidance and access to appropriate sources of capital for startup companies.

Metrics:

  • 12 Million Dollar Babies
  • Assist 30 companies with access to funding
  • $12M in grants and investment received by early stage clients
  • Completed funding boot camps
  • 5 new individuals investing as individual angels or in Enterprise Angels Fund
  • Completed website for Louisville's Enterprise Angels
  • Vetted and coached deal flow provided to local and state angel groups and funds
  • Expanded legislative bill support for KAIA expansion with statewide partners

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

Team support of other EnterpriseCorp strategic initiatives, programs and events as assigned by supervisor.

 REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work within a small, high energy team and adjust quickly.
  • Good judgment and strong work ethic.
  • Passion for entrepreneurship and supporting founders and entrepreneurs.
  • Ability to develop high value partnerships and network among the investment community and related service providers.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook; social media including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Slack, Salesforce, or other CRM experience, a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, deadlines and priorities.
  • Flexible and proactive in taking on assignments and responsibilities, and willingness to learn.
  • Four year degree with business, finance and entrepreneurship experience.  MBA a plus.
