Internship in Government Affairs and Public Policy         

Reports to:          Director of Public Policy Development

FLSA Status:       Non-Exempt                                  

PURPOSE:

Spring 2021 internship with Greater Louisville Inc., starting on May 21, 2021, and ending on August, 2021. This internship involves support for Greater Louisville Inc.'s Government Affairs & Public Policy team. During your time with GLI, you will learn about the daily operations of a professional government affairs team and develop an in-depth understanding of public policy issues and the legislative process. This position is part-time and will include a stipend to be paid upon the successful completion of the internship.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Support the work of GLI's NOW Louisville: 2020-2025 Plan
  • Conduct in-depth research projects and prepare written reports on issues related to public policy, economics, and the business community.
  • Assist with the coordination and preparation of meetings
  • Assist with planning for GLI Advocacy events
  • Learn about the daily operations and procedures of the Kentucky and Indiana state legislatures, Louisville Metro Council, and the United States Congress
  • Assist with GLI communications to policymakers and investors
  • Perform other duties as assigned

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Assisting with miscellaneous tasks as assigned by supervisor(s)

REQUIREMENTS:                                                       

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be well organized and self-motivated
  • Must have knowledge of Outlook and Microsoft Office
  • Must have a demonstrable background in research and writing
  • Must have familiarity with basic concepts of government at the local, state, and federal levels
  • A strong interest in public policy and politics and/or economics is preferred
  • Knowledge of zoning issues and the land development process is encouraged

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work will primarily be conducted virtually from a home office. Work at GLI's offices or meetings outside of the home or GLI's office will depend on official public health guidance from federal, state, and local agencies.
